The Misdemeanor/ Traffic Division is responsible for the prosecution of all misdemeanors, excluding Domestic Violence offenses, in Lake County. The Traffic Division handles both felony and misdemeanor Driving Under the Influence (DUI) offenses in addition to all other misdemeanor traffic offenses. Additionally, the division handles the prosecution of some conservation cases, including Boating Under the Influence and Snowmobiling under the influence matters. 

Most cases are held in Courtrooms T110, T120, T121, T611 at the main courthouse located at 18 N County Road in Waukegan, Illinois. Cases are held at either 9:00 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. Some matters are held at branch courts located in Mundelein and Round Lake Beach Illinois.  

The maximum penalty for a misdemeanor is 354 days in jail. The maximum fine is $2,500. Misdemeanor punishments can include, jail, fines, or a combination of the two.  

The Traffic/ Misdemeanor Team is comprised of a Division Chief, Assistant State’s Attorneys assigned to each courtroom (including attorneys assigned to felony matters), a Victim Specialist, and Courtroom Assigned Support Team Members.  

Using the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office’s guiding principles, the Misdemeanor/Traffic division is dedicated to making Lake County safer and fairer for all. This means smarter prosecution by seeking justice on behalf of victims and the accused including diversionary programs for young, and/or first-time offenders in Anger Management, Behavioral Choice, and Parenting courses, as well as the provision of Alcohol Abuse, Substance Abuse, and Mental Health Treatment.
